Survival Mentality
Survival depends on much more than acquiring a bunch of survival gear and creating an crisis activity plan. Those things are foremost but they pale in comparison to the quality to withstand stress, the quality to adapt, and the rights of a survival mentality. You need to think clearly and not get bogged down in situations that you can’t change. Your survival brain and its quality to control well under stress is the most foremost survival tool in your arsenal.
Perhaps this description is the first time you have ever delved into survival education, or you could have a library of survival books…it doesn’t matter. For some theorize you have decided that there is a real threat to your perceived protection and you have taken activity to educate yourself. I congratulate you for taking the first steps to being ready. Your survival instincts are now in gear.
Survival
Remember those instincts and pay attention to them well…they will go a long way to retention you alive. Design a state of relaxed awareness when you are out in public. When your mind is in this state you are more related to your “gut feelings”; which are nothing more than your subconscious mind warning or directing you to take action.
When you encounter a crisis in a state of relaxed awareness you can think clearly and adapt quickly. Situations that would freeze other population will spring you into action. Things that look commonplace to someone who is “asleep” or has victims mentality will look like implements to help you survive. By continuing your education and maintaining a high level of common sense you will not feel the pain of a disaster any where near as much as your neighbors who ignored all the signals. A note of caution though; not only do you need to continue your research, you need to also convention what you learn. Breast Cancer Survival Rate
When one talks of breast cancer and treatment, the secondary question is its survival rate. Survival rates give patients an idea of the extent of their cancer as well as the treatments that are ready to them. We often hear of five-year survival rates for each stage of breast cancer, but what exactly is breast cancer survival rate?
Breast cancer survival can be described in the following ways:
Survival
- Period of time : 5 or 10 years, that a woman lives after diagnosis
- Risk of recurrence
- Risk of death when compared to others with the same illness
The first is the more popular method. Since the survival rate is commonly categorized according to stages, some points about the stages of breast cancer first.
Stage 0 cancer is the non-invasive type. Cancer cells remain within the walls of the place where they are discovered. For Stage I, the tumor is invasive and is about 2 centimeters long. Stage Iia cancer means that tumor is 2-5 centimeters. With Stage Iib cancer, the tumor may be less than 2 centimeters but a few axillary lymph nodes are affected. For Stage Iiia cancer, the tumor is more than 5 centimeters or it has reached more lymph nodes. Stage Iiib cancer is characterized by the tumor invading the breast skin, regardless of its size. Stage Iv cancer is the most developed form, where the cancer cells have moved far from the breast and have infected other organs of the body as well.
Stages are also described as early (Stages 0-Iia), later (Stage Iib and Iii) and developed (Stage Iv).
When diagnosed with breast cancer it is the stages that will determine the treatment plan.
Survival rates
In computing the survival rate, researchers take note of the ration of women who survive for a definite period of time, say, 5 years, after prognosis of breast cancer. The current survival rates for all breast cancer stages are:
- Five-year survival rate – 86%
- Ten-year survival rate – 76%
Women with no metastatic breast cancer have a 5-year survival rate of 96%, while those with metastatic breast cancer have a 5-year survival rate of 21%
Here are the 5-year survival rates according to stage:
- Stage 0 – 100%
- Stage I – 100%
- Stage Iia – 92%
- Stage Iib – 81%
- Stage Iiia – 67%
- Stage Iiib – 54%
- Stage Iv – 20%
Remember that these are estimates only. Some categorically live longer than 7 years, depending on the medication and lifestyle changes that they make. After 7 years survival rates decrease.
Other factors that work on survival
Preliminary studies have been conducted regarding factors that can work on survival. There are promising results with respect to factors such as changing your diet and lifestyle. While the results are not conclusive yet, it still makes sense to avow a salutary lifestyle. While there is no direct association between practice and increased survival rate, studies showed that practice improved the quality of life of survivors, such as higher self-esteem, improved mood and best sleep patterns. The same holds true for group psychological therapy. Being able to express their feelings and preserve for other survivors had confident effects on their quality of life. Smoking increases the risk of the spread of cancer, as there may be metastasis of cancer from breast to lung.
The importance of early detection cannot be overemphasized. When detected early, the strict treatment can then be administered and once treated, there is less risk for the cancer to spread or recur. That is why doctors and breast cancer advocates encourage quarterly testing and screening for all women. This is critical even after treatment because there is still a risk of recurrence.
Conduct a self breast exam monthly. If necessary, have clinical tests such as mammograms and Mri scans. Ask your doctor for more data on breast cancer and quest the web for answers from experts.
Breast cancer survival rates are mere estimates. Some patients categorically live longer than 5 or 7 years. Changes in diet and lifestyle can growth a patient’s survival rate. Live a salutary lifestyle by eating more fruits, vegetables and fiber, and avoid alcohol intake.

2012 Survival Groups – Is Joining a Survival Group the Key to Surviving Doomsday?
2012 survival groups are now forming world wide and may be the best hope for humanity’s future if an aged Mayan prophecy comes to pass. The prophecy says that an earth changing event will take place on December 21, 2012, the day that the Mayan Long Count Calendar ends. Those knowledgeable about the prophecy warn that this will be the apocalypse, and the earth as we know it will no longer exist. Most sources agree that although the event will be catastrophic, there will be survivors. Will those joining 2012 Survival Groups have the best opportunity to survive?
A well organized survival group will have good odds of living straight through a world disaster than an personel for any reasons. First, most groups have taken great pains to recognize the best places on earth to survive the introductory world trauma. They have acquired the land needed for building suitable protection which can withstand natural events like earthquakes, tidal waves, and radiation fallout. Few individuals would have the resources to tackle a task like this on their own.
Survival
Second, groups are diverse. Those in 2012 survival groups will each specialize in one skill needed for the group to survive and at last flourish as a new society. An personel would be hard pressed to scholar all of the skills needed to live in a post 2012 world by himself.
Finally, those living in the groups will have a intuit also themselves to survive. We are public beings. With most of the current citizen gone, life will be lonely. citizen belonging to a 2012 survival group will have the maintain of a public network and be less likely to succumb to hopelessness and despair than an personel having no one to look toward the future with. Survival groups will be the ones to repopulate the earth. Now, that’s something to live for!

Neck Cancer Survival Rate
In many statistical study conducted, the neck cancer survival rates are fortunately high compared to the other types of cancers. They say that the infer is because throat cancer is truly detected at the earliest stage possible. The symptoms arise as early as stage 0, therefore, more population are being treated early. Needless to say, with early detection and rehabilitation come a higher neck cancer survival rate.
By definition, throat cancer is the cancerous tumors growing inside your throat. Most types of neck cancer arise from our voice box (medically-termed the larynx) while some cases begin from the pharynx or the tonsils as well.
Survival
The major cause of throat cancer is smoking. This also extremely attributes to the fact that cancer of the throat is a lot more prevalent amongst men than women. Because of this, neck cancer survival rate is also reasonably higher in females. Much worse is, because of smoking, the outpatient may also acquire a much more severe disease which is lung cancer.
A five year cancer survival rate is the percentage of population who survived a distinct type of cancer five years after the pathology is confirmed.
Since this cancer is truly detected, a lot of throat cancer patients survive up to 5 years after diagnosis. Some of them even get treated from the disease. At the first stages (stages 0-1), the neck cancer survival rate is as high as 100% if the permissible rehabilitation given. If the tumor isn’t bigger than 5mm, it may be truly removed by surgery. Sometimes your oncologist may no longer propose chemotherapy as a post-operative rehabilitation if future proliferation is unlikely to happen.
Once the cancer progresses into the 2nd stage, expect the rate of survival to drastically lower down to 75% but compared to other cancer survival rates, it’s still quite high. The 3rd stage is critical; hence, the rate of survival is only about 50-60%. At the mid-stages, rehabilitation may only help slowing the improvement of the disease but inevitably, the disease will still advance towards metastasis.
The 4th stage is like the most indispensable stage of all cancers. Patients diagnosed at this stage may only have 20-30% chances of living. At this stage, not a lot of patients survive 2 years after diagnosis.
Prevention is commonly best than cure. Therefore, to avoid the risk of developing this type of cancer, refrain from smoking, chewing tobacco and limit your alcohol use as well.

Stage 4 Lung Cancer Survival Rate
When habitancy talked about stage 4 lung cancer survival rate, it is impossible to predict how long a particular someone will live with their cancer. The stats only apply to averages, which consists of those who lived longer and those who lived less time.
Some do have stage 4 non operable lung cancer. Fewer than 5 out of every 100 habitancy (less than 5%) diagnosed with stage 4 non small cell lung cancer will live for at least 5 years. My diagnosis was possibly only one year with palliative chemo treatments.
Survival
Chemo treatments have not ridden some of the patients’ tumors and they have grown some, but with lifestyle, and diet change along with a huge distinct attitude, some are still surviving, some are still living with it until many years.
Some cured their Stage 4 cancer with eating hot peppers, garlic and fish oil. Some of the patients were using evening primrose oil in place of the fish oil. Maybe you could try something that does not make a someone sick while being treated with recommended food intake.
Most of the time the doctors do not want to take off part of the lung because your chances of surviving the surgical operation is not 100% and some will do treatment 2 times a day with a breathing engine plus a steroid treatment. Please do not give up and make sure refuse to be depressed and all the time look around and say you can help other someone do what ever than some just do it. When they say you are going to die in a year, please tell them they are not God and there is no expiration date yet.

Survival Rates of Patients with Leukemia
Although curative science has evolved significantly in the last decades, the treatment of leukemia is still a major issue in present. Contemporary treatment doesn’t hold the cure for leukemia and curative treatments available these days provide differentiated results. Survival rates depend on the promptitude of diagnosis, the type of treatment and the patients’ responsiveness to specific cancer therapies and treatments. Although leukemia can’t always be thoroughly overcome, the progression of the disease can be slowed down and its malignant effects can be contained with the help of existent cancer treatments. Thus, the life expectancy of patients with leukemia has risen considerably in the last three decades. By contrast, the mortality rate registered among patients with leukemia has known a pronounced decrease in the last decade.
The treatment of leukemia is focused towards achieving a unblemished remission with minimal side-effects. unblemished remission refers to absence of leukemia traces at cellular level. Patients who gift no evidence of malignant cellular operation after completing the treatment of leukemia are carefully to be thoroughly cured. By contrast, relapse indicates a recurrence of leukemia specific symptoms and physiological signs.
Survival
In the case of patients with acute leukemia, a remission that lasts for more than five years after the treatment suggests a unblemished recovery. This five-year period is carefully to be considerable for leukemia sufferers, as it can make the discrepancy between relapse and unblemished recovery.
In the last few decades, the five-year survival period of patients with leukemia has tripled. While in the 60′s the five-year survival rate was around 15 percent, nowadays it revolves around 50 percent. This five-year survival period is strongly influenced by patients’ age and the type of leukemia. Statistics indicate that the five-year survival rate for patients with acute lymphocytic leukemia (All) is around 60 percent, while the five-year survival rate for patients with lasting lymphocytic leukemia (Cll) is higher, reaching the value of 70 percent. By contrast, the prognosis of patients with myelogenous leukemia is less favorable. The same five-year survival rate for patients diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia (Aml) is around 14 percent, while an estimated 32 percent of patients with lasting myelogenous leukemia (Cml) exceed this five-year survival period.
The five-year survival rate for children diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia revolves around the value of 80 percent, while the farranging survival rate of children with acute lymphocytic leukemia is less than 45 percent. This type of leukemia is the most coarse form of cancer diagnosed in children. Due to the fact that it predominantly affects young patients with ages between 3 and 15, the disease is referred to as childhood leukemia.
In the United States, the mortality rate for children with leukemia has decreased with 60 percent in the last three decades. In spite of this fact, leukemia is still the important cause of death among young patients with ages under 15.

Breast Cancer Survival Rate – Stage 2 Breast Cancer
The 5-year breast cancer survival rate for stage 2 breast cancer diagnosed in the U.S. Varies agreeing to size of the tumor and whether or not cancer has spread to the lymph nodes.
If the breast cancer is under 2 centimeters in diameter and has spread to the lymph nodes under the arm (the axillary lymph nodes), it is stage Iia breast cancer and the survival rate is 88%-92% (American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute).
Survival
If the breast cancer is between 2-5 centimeters but has not spread, it is also called stage Iia.
If the breast cancer is between 2-5 centimeters in diameter and has spread to the lymph nodes, it is called stage Iib breast cancer and the 5-year breast cancer survival rate is 76%-81%.
If the breast cancer is larger than 5 centimeters but has not spread beyond the breast, it is also called stage Iib
Up to 29% of diagnosed breast cancer is Stage 2 breast cancer for white women and 36% for black women. An mean of 62% of all breast cancer is diagnosed when it is still localized to the breast area or Stage 1 breast cancer. If the cancer is detected early enough, such as Stage 1 breast cancer, then the 5-year breast cancer survival rate is as high as 98%-100%. Early detection is the most foremost way to save the lives of cancer patients.
Fortunately for breast cancer patients, there has been a great deal of exertion put into providing data about early detection. Early detection and improved treatments are the former suspect for increasing breast cancer survival rates.
Women can help themselves with monthly self-examinations done at the same time every month. When a woman is 20 she should make sure that she gets a clinical exam at least every three years. After the age of 40, the clinical exams should be part of her yearly health check-up, along with her mammogram.
Women can also help themselves with healthy habits that may help breast cancer prevention, such as regular moderate exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding inordinate alcohol. These, and other healthy habits should be maintained for life since the risk of breast cancer increases with age.
There is also a 10% chance of breast cancer recurrence even after victorious treatment. You can learn about three healthy habits that have shown a 50% decrease in breast cancer recurrence at http://www.green-tea-health-news.com/breast-cancer-recurrence.html.

Reality Shock For Graduate Nurses
So now you are close to graduating from nursing school or you have graduated recently. Whichever the case, you will be in for a reality shock when you begin your vocation as a Registered Nurse. What do we mean by the term, “reality shock”? Well, like the term says, it is the reality that shocks us. The ask you may ask is, “so there is a disagreement in the reality of being a learner or graduate nurse”? The retort is an emphatic, Yes!
First of all, as a learner nurse you were given assignments that were not beyond the scope of your practice or ability. In expanding to that, you were working under your instructor’s license and either or not you were aware, they kept a very close watch on you. Therefore, there was a protection net that always hovered beneath you in case you were to fall. This is not the case as you take on the title, Registered Nurse. There is no protection net. You are out there by yourself, free to make decisions and make mistakes. With those decisions and mistakes you are also, Fully Accountable.
Survival
Now fantasize yourself with eight or more patients. You may be asking yourself, “What do you mean eight or More patients?” Most learner nurses never have more than six or seven patients and that is only at the very end of the program. Even then, the learner nurses can delegate tasks to assistive personnel thereby lessening their work load. However, there will be time that you will be on a floor, without any assistive personnel, with more than eight patients and no one to rely on except yourself. To aggregate this scenario, there may be patients that have very requisite care pathways that you must follow, incoming calls from patient’s families, doctor’s, operating room staff, and other collaborative care departments requesting information.
Now, let’s stop this scenario in its tracks. You probably feel the stress construction by just reading the old passage. If so, don’t worry, it is a perfectly general reaction. So, relax, and know that there are ways to ease this determined right of passage. Let’s take a look at some of the ways to help ease and deal with reality shock.
1. First of all, it is leading to understand that, “reality shock” does of course exist and you will come face to face with it. Knowing what you will face is most of the battle. The task at hand then becomes, knowing what steps to take and resources to use, and how to use them.
2. Learn as much as you can while your in-service training program, which normally lasts up to eight weeks or more. This means familiarizing yourself with every inch of your floor. Know where everything is located, from protection pins to I.V. Tubing. You may never know when you may need it, Now, and the worst thing that can happen is that you spend costly time seeing for something as small as a protection pin.
3. Know, who the assisted personnel are, and know them by name and face. Find out who will be the ones that you will be working with while your shift. What normally happens while in-service training is that graduate nurses train on the main shift, which is most oftentimes days, before transferring to the shift that they have been hired to work. Therefore it is very leading to know who you will be working with while your shift. Try also to produce a working association with the assistive personnel. Remember, it is not a popularity game, you are not out to make best friends. Your goal is quality outpatient care, and the outpatient comes first.
Let your intentions be known that your number one goal is to give the best outpatient care that you have respect for the care team assistive personnel and are a willing and helpful body to them as well. In doing this, you will have disabled the indiscernible wall that exists between nurses and assistive personnel. That wall is the one entitled, I am a Nurse and you are Only an aide. One thing that you must strive for is to use an even tone of voice, and fairness when delegating. You must also remember the ownership of delegation, which are as follows,
a. The right task,
b. The right person,
c. The right communication, (must be clear and concise),
d. The right feedback, (the person who is delegated the task must realize what it is that is asked of them and let the nurse know that they comprehend). By doing this you are ensuring that outpatient care will not suffer do to a personality glitch, which could have been avoided.
4. Know, know and Know where the policy and policy hand-operated is located on the floor. Part of your hospital in-service will consist of the introduction of the policy and policy Manual. This is the hand-operated that you will have to refer to many times for protocol from everything from changing out a Foley Catheter to transporting a outpatient to other floor. The final diagnosis will be in any investigation, “did the nurse use and supervene the policy and policy Manual?” You want to always be sure that you supervene the rules and protocols contained in your institutions manual. Therefore, you should know where it is located and be familiar with how to look up varied procedures and policies.
5. The policy concerning medication errors. Most everybody makes them and it is crucial that you know what paperwork is required to be filled out. It will come in handy. You cannot just, “wing it”, when production a decision, you have to supervene protocol.
6. Use assertive communication when interacting with doctors’. Assertive communication indicates that you are aware of yourself and your limitations as well as your liability to the patients that you care for. Using this form of communication with over assertive medical personnel will help you function to your maximum quality and earn respect as an independent care professional. facts on the uses and strategies concerning assertive communication, please refer to the text entitled, Nursing Today, Transition and Trends, by JoAnn Zerwekh, Jo Carol Claborn, 5th edition, Co. 2006, Saunders, Philadelphia.}
7. Ask questions. You will have time while your in-service training to ask questions and get answers. It is your right to do so. Remember, not knowing is not an excuse, and you do not want to be in a situation where there will be no-one to ask. This is not to say that you will know everything, but a least you are giving yourself a head start and a good solid foundation by knowing what you can. So don’t be afraid to ask. Also, know who your resources are, for questions that you may have on the shift that you will be working.
8. Find a mentor with whom you can relate. Try to find person not only on the shift while training, but also on the shift that you will be working. It is nice to find person who has the contact and insight as well as person that you can get along. There might be a time that you will want to call them in the middle of the night and vent your concerns, or just to have them give you determined input in your performance. Mentors are requisite to the increase of a new nurse.
9. Lastly, Know, Know and Know, what your State Nurse practice Act states. This Act, is your guideline for most all that you do as a Registered Nurse. Know it well.
Hopefully these tips will help to ease the reality shock that you will face while your transition from learner nurse to full time graduate nurse. Remember, you can’t do it all. You are a welcome asset to your employer, but first and leading an embodiment of all that Florence Nightingale stood for. Best wishes on your journey.

There’s no doubt that stage 4 cancer is one of the most horrible things that can happen to anyone, however, there have been contradictory articles regarding the life expectancy of a cancer at such an industrialized stage. As a result, this article has been written to spell out, for once and for all, the facts about this issue.
Before I begin, let’s get one thing straight. Population who are suffering from any type of stage 4 cancer have very low 5-year survival rates. This is unfortunately a fact of life as the human race has still not come up with a cure for cancer. Despite this, you should never lose hope as there have been Population who survived a stage 4 cancer and lived to tell the tale. It is extremely recommended that you read their tales and draw impel and inspiration from them.
Survival
I will now go through a concise diagnosis of the life expectancy of 3 types of cancer.
Lung Cancer
Statistics show that Population with stage 4 lung cancer have a 32% opportunity of living for one year while only 2% live longer than 5 years. This shouldn’t be a cause for concern as that 2% means that there is still hope that you can enjoy many more years with your loved ones.
Colon Cancer
Unfortunately, there have been very few cases of Population who have lived more than 5 years with stage 4 of this disease. However, with improvements in chemotherapy you can operate the symptoms and prolong the life of a sufferer which could mean so much for them and their loved ones.
Bone Cancer
The good news about stage 4 bone cancer is that the 5-year survival rate is in the middle of 19 and 49 percent. That may seem encouraging but keep in mind that it depends on either the cancer is benign or malignant.
Don’t ever forget that your chances of beating cancer or increasing stage 4 cancer life expectancy is strongly dependent on your determination and attitude throughout.
