We hear a lot about Iraq these days and much about Baghdad. There is quite a bit about this geographical area in the Bible. Turn with me to one scenario in Isaiah episode 40. There are relevant and practical lessons here for each one of us in these gift days.

What is the background to Isaiah episode 40 and what could it possibly have to say to us today?

Wilderness

The habitancy of Israel have been captives – prisoners – exiles – in Babylon – modern day Iraq – for nearby 50 years.

They had been disobedient to God – the Father of our Saviour and Lord, Jesus Christ. They had been given many opportunities to repent – to turn back to God – to say sorry for the way they had been living. They had refused to hear discrete preachers and prophets sent by God.

How long would they be prisoners? How long would they have to suffer? They were so sad, they could not sing.

There is a lot of sadness nearby today, with few signs of victory.

The good news is that God’s Anger does not last for ever! God gives His man Isaiah a word to preach – a message to proclaim. It is a word of comfort.

If you need a word of ease today this word is for you – ease means to fortress – to expand you – the word means “to be with strength” – to make you strong and impregnable like a castle.

God says – Preach to my habitancy – a word of comfort. Tell My habitancy I love them – tell My habitancy – “This is Your God speaking!” O to hear the voice of God – and we hear the voice of God straight through the Word of God.

Isaiah – ease My habitancy – ease My people. Tell my habitancy they have had adequate suffering – speak tenderly to my people. Fill them with courage so that they can face what they have to face.

When you ease someone you do not molly-coddle them. You don’t wrap them in cotton wool and keep them from the truth.

Comforting is putting strength into people’s hearts, and Jesus Christ teaches us that the Holy Spirit is our Comforter. The Holy Spirit gives strength for today and strength for to-morrow.

To tell habitancy that things are all right when they are not is deceitful misleading and lying. God had punished His habitancy Israel for their sins – but now they were being wronged – they were being persecuted in that land of Babylon – and God will save His habitancy when they are wronged. That is our God. “Our God reigns”.

God turns from judgement to mercy – from punishment to pardon – from causing His habitancy suffering to rescue them from unjust suffering. Now, that is righteousness – a word we seldom here mentioned today..

Tell my habitancy – speak tenderly to them – let them know that they will soon be going back to Jerusalem.

These are verses to read when you are going straight through it – when you are being persecuted – when times are difficult. They begin with a whisper and end with a shout.

God is wooing His habitancy – tell her that her hard service is over – it has been completed – her period of suffering and warfare is past. It is the word used for conscription – tell her that she is being demobbed – set free – released from this painful past. She is about to go home – back to Jerusalem. The warfare has stopped – she has paid for her sins – that is past.

Isaiah – cry out – call out to My habitancy – tenderly. “In the desert get ready for the way of the Lord – make a level smooth road for Me.”

Isaiah – be like a prophetic bulldozer – flatten the bumps – fill in the potholes – I am advent straight through the desert to My habitancy – and men will see the glory of the Lord.

These words were applied to John the Baptist as he ready the way for the advent of Jesus. When Jesus comes again it will be like a spiritually dry barren wilderness – but every person will see it – every person will know that He has returned – and the glory of the Lord will be revealed.

God says to Isaiah – Cry Out – but Isaiah is not very sure what to preach. Tell the habitancy that all men are like grass – their fame and glory is very temporary – they are like flowers in the field on a hot summer’s day. Suddenly they disappear. Tell My habitancy that the Word of the Lord stands for ever. habitancy come and go – but the word of our Lord stands for ever.

Do you need a word to comfort, expand and uphold you today? Then, here it is.

The Sahara Desert is often described as a bleak and barren plain. In truth, it is very beautiful and full of separate Sahara Desert vegetation.

Among desert areas throughout the Earth, there are two types. The cold type of desert, which is often found in Arctic regions, is an area that gets very limited precipitation. The cold desert can be covered in snow, however, and the temperatures here are chilly and unsuitable for sustaining many life forms. The other type of desert is known as the hot desert, and this is what population regularly think of when they picture a desert area. This type of desert is extremely warm and dry, with temperatures reaching unbearable levels, and limited to no rain to reserve those who live here. The biggest of the hot deserts is the Sahara Desert, settled in Africa. Although this desert is not the most hospitable place for organisms to take up residence, the Sahara Desert vegetation defies the odds and thrives here.

Wilderness

Many of the Sahara Desert species in existence today are separate than those you would have found in the area while the end of the last ice age. At that time in history, melting ice sheets from the ice age as well as weather patterns which caused monsoon conditions in the region allowed much more vegetation to grow in the Sahara. In around the year 2500 Bc, the monsoon conditions retreated to the south, allowing for the desertification of the Sahara region, which returned it to the dry state it was in before the last ice age.

There are still some areas of the Sahara Desert that can be considered lush and green. The Nile Valley, for example, is an area that is still quite full of foliage, trees and other growing things. This area is an exception, because of the way it is fed by the Nile River. Other area of the Sahara that has some vegetation to it is in the North, along the Mediterranean – here, olive trees grow in abundance. The Saharan highlands are also home to species of trees, such as the doum palm, date palm and oleander; as well as herbs such as thyme.

The rest of the Sahara Desert is sparse and vegetation does not cover much of the area. Here, away from rivers and highlands, grasses and shrubs that have adapted to the high heat of the area conduct to survive. Also, halphytes, which are saline-tolerant plants (those plants which can grow in areas of high salt content) grow in the saline depressions of the Sahara. For a desert area, the Sahara manages to have many separate types of vegetation, all of which have had to adapt to the unique challenges of a dry desert climate.

One of my popular themes for a limited boy’s room is the log cabin kids rustic bedroom theme. This was the option of my son, Dakota, and we had a lot of fun achieving the “lodge” look for his room. What I liked best about it, was that it was suitable for a young boy, but works just as well for an older boy. There is a lot of room for creativity with a rustic style theme room. Lots of boys like to camp out, go hiking, fish and eye the outdoors. The room can be created to feel like your child is experiencing a wilderness adventure every night! Some build tips and suggestions are as follows:

1. There are so many options for bedding that are suitable with a rustic look, such as comforter sets that feature bear, moose, elk, deer and camping scenery. Log cabin quilts are someone else option, and there are numerous log cabin and rustic theme quilts available. Denim bedding or plaid flannel patterns for bedding and linens can also be used. Homespun fabrics in ticking stripes also works. For my son’s room, we used a solid print earth tone comforter, a beautiful rustic coverlet with moose in a fall scene, and an assortment of throw cushions with wildlife and navaho prints.

Wilderness

2. Rustic wood beds, heavy timber-look bed frames or handcrafted log beds work the best for the rustic bedroom theme.

3. Walls can be painted in earth tone colors, such as tan, rust, copper, or warm shades of brown. A color project of red and hunter green contrasts well with wood tones. Choose a color from the bedding if possible, or a complimentary contrasting color. Wall paper borders are ready with all things from bear, moose, elk, camping scenes, snowshoes, forests and trees, and trout. someone else fun option is to use log wallpaper. This works best if it is run partially up the wall. The paint above can be a neutral creme or tan color, to preclude the room from finding to dark. Wood paneling or rough-sawn plywood panels can also be used. Try painting log ‘beams’ on the ceiling.

4. A stone fireplace running up the distance of one wall, creates a cozy feel. Fake stone can also be purchased. Wall art can be purchased with wilderness scenes, animals, the woods etc. Photos can be cut out from books or magazines, framed, and hung on the walls, or clustered together in groups on dressers and bookshelves. We used prints by Bev Doolittle for my son’s room, as we both loved the color and scenery. Stock photos can be purchased online of bear, moose and deer, for a minimal price. They can be printed and framed. Rough frames can be made by hand. Small tree branches can be used as curtain rods.

5. Use stuffed animals, such as beaver, bear, moose, elk, squirrels, rabbits, raccoons and owls. Throw pillows with the same animals can be used on the bed or grouped together on the floor. Hang fake geese in mid-flight from the ceilings. Use old trunks to store toys.

6. Try painting an outdoor scene on the wall, or purchase a wall mural of the forest. This can then have a ‘window frame’ applied to the surrounding edges. Accessories can include: vintage signs, country cabin or wildlife area rugs, rustic lighting and ornamental lanterns.

7. Wooden furniture works the best in the log cabin theme room. Straightforward squared-off furniture in oak, pine, or rustic furniture. Vintage household items, fishing lures, canoe paddles, or a set of weathered snowshoes can be hung on the wall. Canoe bookshelves work well in this space.

I hope you find these tips helpful. Have fun!

Is faith in God directly connected to worldly success? The retort has to be no. Despite the large whole of books published on the so-called Prosperity Gospel, perpetuating the idea that it is God’s will for those who love Him that they should prosper in life, our palpate of the world and the weight of evidence tells us otherwise. Nevertheless I am going to argue, in this article, that faith is a vital ingredient in success.

A study of the stories behind major spiritual traditions reminds us that for many habitancy on a faith journey there is such a thing as ‘the wilderness experience’. What exactly is this experience? It is a interesting fact that some of those who founded the world’s major faiths – outstanding examples among them being Jesus Christ, the Prophet Muhammed, and the Buddha – spent a duration of recession in a wild, lonely place, before becoming clear about their life’s purpose. The Buddha sat under the Bodhi Tree at Bodh Gaya before he achieved the enlightenment he had sought for many years; the Prophet Muhammad, we are told, was a quiet and reflective someone who would spend time by himself in a cave called ‘al-Hira’. He then went on to palpate his vision of the Angel Gabriel from whom he received his first revelation. And of policy Jesus spent 40 days and 40 nights in the wilderness, being tempted by Satan to pick paths of worldly success and fame, before embarking on a very dissimilar path through a 3-year ministry destined to culminate in one astonishing event which would transform the lives of millions.

Wilderness

Those whom God favours do not vital find an easy life full of material success. Many who ensue in this world have no faith in God at all. We can see evidence of this all nearby us, in every field of human endeavour. So I am going to resist any temptation to reserve a direct link between religious faith and success. What I advise to do is open out our interpretation of the word ‘faith’. And in so doing, it may be we gawk that God is bigger than any human endeavor to confine Him within the boundaries of organised religion.

In defining ‘faith’ in broad terms, however, possibly we can begin with the definition offered by the writer of the letter to the Hebrews in The New Testament, who says, ‘Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.’ This seems to me a very good beginning place. For faith is something that transcends disappointment, long years of waiting and many rejections. It is an unswerving inner conviction that you are on the right path and must persist in it despite all evidence to the contrary.

We all have within us what I call ‘an inner sense of verity.’ Some would say this is expressed through intuition. It is a sad fact though that due to the pace of our lives and the sheer weight of operation and the distraction of our thoughts, often we ignore that first intuition. We discount it or immediately forget it. Yet I have found on many occasions that the very first flash of intuition has finally proved to be correct. Faith is like that. Faith is like a pilot light inside us saying, ‘Yes, this is what I should be doing, and the only way to go is forward.’

There is a particularly relevant phrase that has become a cliche because it is used so often. But here it is, because there’s truth behind it. ‘The darkest hour is just before dawn.’ Often when somebody has achieved great success, we might hear them say, ‘I was just about to give up.’ The all-important fact is, though, that they didn’t.

And so it follows, I believe, that faith is vital to success. And that those who apparently ‘fail’ in life, do so simply because they gave up too early.

But if you have given up too early, and now wish you hadn’t, there is a straightforward remedy. Take heart from these words by Raynor Johnson: ‘The way through is to face the mistake and take up courageously the pilgrim’s way, knowing that the goal is there and will some day be attained.’
