The story of how God hardened Pharaoh’s heart can be found in Exodus 5, and onward. Pharaoh was the ruler of Egypt, and had enslaved the Israelites to the point where they began to cry out to God. While that was going on, God was preparing Moses in the wilderness to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.

After 40 years in the wilderness, God sent Moses to Pharaoh and tell him to let the Israelites go. Pharaoh, however, refused to let the Israelites go, and instead he made them work even harder. God then sent plagues upon the land that made Pharaoh turn his mind, and he let the people go. But then, the Bible says that God hardened Pharaoh’s heart and he refused to let the Israelites go afterall.

    Wilderness

This looks like a mean trick that God played on Pharaoh. But was it really? Why did God do what he did? Why did He make the people, especially the Egyptians, suffer the way that they suffered from all those plagues? From a distance, this may look cruel on behalf of God, but when you take a closer look, it is easy to see why God would do such as thing. And trust me, it is one of the most loving things that God could have ever done for Pharaoh, and for the Egyptians.

First of all, you have to understand that God wants to draw all men unto him. He does not want that whatever should perish. As a result, He allows hard times to fall upon people so that they will turn to Him for help. He wants to work a miracle in our lives to help us to believe in Him. In Pharaoh’s case, God performed many miracles, thus, giving Pharaoh many opportunities to search for the power of God so that he would turn to Him. But Pharaoh would not.

The plagues might also have been there to advantage the Egyptians. The Bible makes no mention of any Egyptians arrival to God as a ensue of the plagues. However, it could very well be that they were also sent to show them the power of God, so they could repent and turn from their gods as well.

Another potential intuit why God hardened Pharaoh’s heart was to demonstrate to the Israelites that He was on their side. The Israelites only suffered from the first three plagues, but after that, they were protected from the rest. Therefore, it was to help the Israelites to grow in faith towards God. This way they would have the power not to doubt God’s power as they traveled straight through the wilderness.
